Sneaky Sugars

I just wanted to start off by saying a BIG thank you to all of you who so generously donated dollars last week so that I could help to feed the students in Tanna. Altogether we raised enough for 3 big food deliveries each week which will feed 120 students for the next 4 mths. WOW! I am overwhelmed! I have now set up a bank account in Tanna to manage all the funds (with lots of support from trustworthy people there) so for those of you who were disappointed about missing the deadline you can still send some $$ through. See below for details.

Sugar can be very sneaky as it is often in foods which we are not aware of. There is so much hype about ‘low fat’ foods, which leads to us forgetting about the hidden energy dense sugars that we consume without realising. Remember 6 teaspoons of sugar is equivalent to 100 calories. So if you decided to mindfully consume 100calories less every day, then without thinking or doing anything else you would lose 1kg/yr and be 10kg lighter in 10yrs. Yah!

Here are the most common offenders:

  • Hot chocolate – 5 teaspoons of sugar
  • Vanilla Latte - 7.5 teaspoons of sugar
  • Small fruit juice – 4 teaspoons of sugar
  • Lemon lime bitters – 6 teaspoons of sugar
  • 2 teaspoons Jam – 2 teaspoons of sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Milo – 2 ½ teaspoons of sugar
  • Ice block - 2 ½ teaspoons of sugar
  • 5 All Natural Confectionery – 4 teaspoons of sugar
  • Fruit muesli – 3 teaspoons of sugar
Have an active and nourishing weekend,
Heidi
