Are Bananas Really That Expensive?

The media has told us that we are going to have to pay a small fortune for our banana’s from now on due to Queensland’s floods and cyclones, as an estimated 75% of this year’s crop has been lost.

But how expensive is expensive????

Banana’s are selling between $8 and $10 a kg at the moment. Sure a little bit more than they have in previous years, but when you compare this excellent snack food to some of the other snack options that also come in an easy to remove cover, then perhaps we should re-think our purchasing choices.

For example:

  • Tim Tams = $15/kg
  • Muesli Bars = $28/kg
  • Crisps = $35/kgMars Bar = $40/kg

One of the upsides is that the slower-growing banana’s grown in NSW are hitting our shelves. Fratelli Fresh’s Barry McDonald says, “They’re longer on the plant, and they’re creamier; the appearance is dull and they can be spotty, but the flavour is good.”

My Grandma had a banana farm on the mid-coast of NSW for decades so I am very excited that we will now get more of an opportunity to eat these yummy bananas that I have grown up with.

Bananas have a low GI, they are packed with antioxidants, are a fabulous energy pick-me-up, and the banana is the best fruit source of Vitamin B6.

When thinking about where to spend our dollars on food, I think the most important factor at the moment is that we support our local farmers. Of course, how you budget each week has to also be taken into account, but as you can see from above that relative to other ‘snacks’, bananas aren’t really expensive at all.

Have an active and nourishing weekend,
Heidi

  • Hmm it looks like your blog ate my first comment (it was super long) so I guess I’ll just sum it up what I had written and say, I’m thoroughly enjoying your blog. I as well am an aspiring blog blogger but I’m still new to the whole thing. Do you have any suggestions for newbie blog writers? I’d genuinely appreciate it.
